Toorimachi is the place that was given the privilege to open the one and only “Morning market”. In the Edo period (1603-1868 CE), Toorimachi was given the privilege to open morning markets to sell daily products such as vegetables and firewood.
Even today, there are still many remnants of the city from those days and places where one can still feel the Satake clan’s presence.

History In 1629, less than 400 years ago, Lord Satake planned the city of Oomachi and Torimachi to build 2 story buildings. Receiving the order from Akita clan, Oomachi and Toorimachi beautiful built 2 story buildings. The unique fortitude look of the city was later recorded in the “Ashikurige” Toorimachi represented the “Akita clan”, since it was a path for many customers and travelers to visit the Akita castle. Therefore, the city was appropriately designed. The beautiful landscape design of the castle, city, and streets show the strong motivation and interest of Lord Satakess policy. Still in present time you will be able to see the Toorimachis remnants. During that era, Toorimachi was divided by 3 local governments. From the closest to Akita castle, they were called Kamitoorimachi, Nakadoorimachi, Daikumachi. Toorimachi is the street that connects these 3 streets. Around 150 years ago, in 1864, Toorimachi was given inheritance of specific products from market privilege. Toorimachi has become a street that is even more popular than before with crowded vegetable markets. The history and culture of this street was famous for the shopping district of the area of Kubota castle town.
Our future vision is to become a “Oragachou Shopping District” with a strong community that is truly loved to local residents. Now the shopping area of about 600 meters, around 70 stores are open including, fresh foods, sweets, flowers, ceramics, pharmacies, home appliances, bicycles, and etc. Around 20 years ago, as a Shopping District Promotion Association the street implemented a modernization project. Large events were able to open after the setback added larger sidewalks and more comfortable shopping areas.
